About the Author

Jack London was born John Griffith Chaney on Market Street in San Francisco, California, on January 12, 1876. Much of his youth was spent in Oakland, California, on the waterfront. In 1897 Jack went to Alaska to unsuccessfully seek his fortune in the Gold Rush. A year later he returned to Oakland and took up writing professionally. As a young man, Jack became a passionate Socialist, and unsuccessfully ran several times for mayor of Oakland as a Socialist Party candidate. Jack married twice, and traveled extensively in the Pacific and South Seas. For many years he suffered from health problems, including stomach disturbances and failing kidneys. Upon returning to California after a health trip to Hawaii, Jack London died on November 22, 1916 at the age of 40. He is considered by many to have been America's finest author.
